Dufour Yachts – Dufour 460 Review

Dufour 460 Review
The Dufour 460 Grand Large offers a perfect balance between functionality and elegance.

Defined by her sleek and beautiful lines the Dufour 460 certainly stands out from the crowd and is much admired on any dock.

Equally important was achieving the right balance between the practical aspects of sailing and how owners and their families imagine to live onboard.

It is this greater degree of comfort and luxury along with the clever use of space and innovative design that really sets the Dufour 460 aside from her competitors.

A wider hull shape, more than you would normally expect on a boat of this size, has been designed both for performance in a wide range of wind conditions and to offer the maximum space around the cockpit area, bathing platform and aft cabins.

First seen at the Cannes Boat Show in September 2015 the Dufour 460 is the successor of the exceptional Dufour 445 and 450 GL. Designed by the Italian designer Umberto Felci this yacht holds the same core values that can be found throughout the whole of the Grand Large Range.

Cockpit …..

As you would expect there are the now common twin helms that allow both unrestricted movement around the cockpit as well as providing excellent visibility forward whilst sailing.

Both helms have dedicated locations for a range of instruments and plotters for easy navigation and lifting foot rests which create a solid platform to brace your feet when sailing at an angle but then fold down when not in use to leave a smooth cockpit floor.

The engine throttle is conveniently mounted by the starboard helm at waist height for easy control when manoeuvring.

Of course there are options to have bow and stern thrusters depending on your requirements.

The standard engine is a Volvo 55 Hp with the option of a 75 Hp both on a sail drive with either fixed or folding propellers.

You will find plentiful seating around the back of the cockpit both for the helmsman as well as for your guests who may wish to simply relax.

On the port side the cockpit seat folds up to create a large sun pad.

The aft seating lifts up to allow access on and off the transom and to expose a fully functional exterior galley with gas grill and a sink.

You will find a generous cockpit table with large leaves for eating outside and an enclosed fridge.

This additional outside galley and dining area truly revolutionises the way you are able to live and relax onboard, more than you can possibly imagine.

There is a large locker under the cockpit floor for a dinghy / life raft and a small locker on the transom housing the bathing ladder and space for a gas bottle. This is in addition to the two good sized central cockpit lockers.

Hull …..

The hull features Dufour’s now characteristic hull chines, these are there for both extra performance and as a way of controlling the amount of heel when sailing upwind.

The 3 large distinctive hull windows allow in plenty of natural light to the interior of the boat.

A near vertical bow and clean lines creates an impressive and striking profile.

An electric motor operates the full width bathing platform that lowers to provided easy access onto the boat and a large comfortable place to relax.

Deck …..

The side decks are noticeably wider than you might expect on a boat of this size and with the shrouds mounted outboard this allows easy and unrestricted movement around the boat.

There are good hand holds around the coachroof and a deep wooden toe rail for extra support.

A deep and easily accessed deck locker forward offers plenty of storage for ropes, fenders and any extra sails.

Good height stanchions and guard rails around the boat offers excellent security and a double gate midships creates options for boarding through an opening gate.

Sailing …..

This is a yacht perfect for distance cruising or simply for anyone that simply enjoys a yacht that handles and performs well. Whatever your requirements the Dufour 460 is easy to handle and designed to sail shorthanded if you wish.

The mast is a deck stepped 9/10 fractional aluminium mast by Z Spar with 2 sets of swept spreaders. The furling gear is made by Facnor and the sails by Elvstrom.

Controlling winches for the main and genoa sheets are positioned aft next to the helm positions for easy handling. There are 2 large coachroof winches at the companionway entrance for the halyards and reefing lines, electric options are available for all the winches.

A self tacking jib is standard with the option of choosing a 108% overlapping headsail.
The latest Facnor Flat deck furling system is smooth and trouble free, it also allows the genoa tack to be positioned lower for better sail shape and efficiency.

Downwind sails are hoisted off the permanent “Dolphin Bow” which also houses the anchor.

A full width mainsheet traveller provides direct control of the mainsail shape and the low positioning of the gooseneck creating an inclined boom offers easy handling of the mainsail when stowing or reefing and alleviates the need to use mast steps to reach the head of the sail.

Construction ….

The hull is built of solid fibreglass. High load areas such as chain plates and keel areas are re enforced and a moulded floor tray is laminated into the hull to provide additional strength and a solid point for all the interior components.

The decks are constructed using a process of injection moulding this creates a one piece deck offering a superior strength to weight ratio and far better control and consistency of build.

It also allows greater headroom below without increasing the overall height of the coach roof and the potential to spoil her elegant lines.

Keel bolts bear on stainless steel backing plates, the rudder with its stainless steel rudder stock is filled with a closed cell epoxy foam.

All Dufour Yachts are built to Category A Ocean Rating and have a high ballast ratio which creates a safe and reliable yacht.

With the location of the galley at the forward end of the yacht it has been possible to create an impressive saloon area.

On the port side an integrated bench offers an additional space to relax and you will seat 8 comfortably around the saloon table.

There are two choices of interior wood, Moabi and Light Oak plus a wide range of fabric options.

Depending on your choice of layout you can configure the boat to have a longitudinal galley.

Within the galley area you will find a gas cooker, double sink along with a two draw fridge.

A feature of the Dufour 460’s galley is the numerous and unusually deep cupboards for all your cooking equipment plus areas for a microwave, freezer and dishwasher if you wish.

The master cabin combines functionality and comfort, there is generous storage found in the deep cupboards around the cabin as well us pull out draws under the bed.

The heads are divided in to two separate compartments, one providing a shower

and sink, the other a toilet and wash hand basin.

The design of the hull allows the beam to extend along way aft.

This creates 2 generously sized aft cabins which offer plenty of light and headroom.

The creative use of lighting ensures a warm and appealing living area, the large deck windows and numerous hatches allow plenty of natural light and ventilation down below.
