The aim of the Coastal Skipper Course is to teach the skills and techniques required to skipper a cruising yacht safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night.
It is assumed that those attending will be competent sailors with a good knowledge of the theory of navigation and meteorology and will already have a level of experience approaching to the suggested minimum pre course experience.
On this course you will look at all aspects of skippering a yacht on longer passages, you will plan and execute passages taking it in turns to adopt the role of skipper with your fellow students.
Through a process of practical instruction and detailed debriefing sessions you will learn from your experienced instructor as well as from the experiences of the other people onboard.
As part of the course and weather permitting you will undertake a longer passage as well as practice mooring in a variety of challenging conditions. Students who have successfully completed the Coastal Skipper course are awarded the RYA Coastal Skipper Completion certificate.
Please note that this is not the same as the Yachtmaster Coastal which is a certificate of competence awarded after a short examination.
We offer the option for you to book your own sleeping area for that extra privacy and comfort but if you are happy to share then we offer a discounted rate.
We run our courses with a maximum of 4 students normally 3. This offers each student much more hands on time and combined with the extra space onboard we find that by reducing the numbers it creates a better learning environment all round.
Our sailing school is based in Mercury Yacht Harbour on the River Hamble and sailing takes places in and around the Solent.
