Portsmouth

A city surrounded by the sea, Portsmouth's history is strongly linked with the Royal Navy. The city houses some superb military and maritime museums including Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the D-Day Museum and Overlord Embroidery, and the Royal Marines Museum.

The Historic Dockyard is the jewel in Portsmouth's crown, home to the world famous historic ships The Mary Rose, HMS Victory and HMS Warrior 1860. Together with interactive Action Stations, The Royal Naval Museum and Harbour Tours, there truly is something for all ages.

A short walk away, Gunwharf Quays is a buzzy hotspot and premier waterfront destination, open night and day, with over 85 designer shopping outlets, art gallery, cinema, casino, nightclubs and restaurants with al fresco dining.

You can find Portsmouth's newest attraction here, the 170m Spinnaker Tower, which has stunning views over the Solent. On a clear day you can see up to 23 miles over to the Isle of Wight, Chichester and the South Downs. Walk on air on the glass floor if you dare!

The Victorian seafront at Southsea has a funfair and swimming complex, and the large open green spaces are perfect for lazy picnics, gentle strolls and kite flying. The underground passages at Southsea Castle are well worth exploring, or discover local and tropical marine life at the Blue Reef Aquarium, a great day out whatever the weather.

Or step back in time and discover the charms of the Old Town with cobbled streets and hidden secrets such as Portsmouth's Anglican Cathedral dating back to 1185.

Gosport / Haslar (Portsmouth Harbour)

Immediately inside Portsmouth Harbour and with easy access of The Solent lies Haslar Marina.
Within the surrounding area there is plenty to do. Alternatively take the Gosport Ferry over to Gunwharf Quays to experience everything that Portsmouth has to offer.

Explosion! The Museum of Naval Firepower is a hands on, interactive museum set in the historic setting of Gosport's former gunpowder and munitions depot. Open at weekends 10am-4pm, it tells the story of naval warfare from the days gunpowder to modern missiles.

Dive into the past and the future at The Royal Navy Submarine Museum, where you can take a guided tour of World War II submarine HMS Alliance, led by a submariner, or climb on board Holland I - the Navy's first submarine from 1901.

Come and visit Gosport's only working brewery, Oakleaf Brewing Company. The family run brewery produces a range of mouth-watering cask and bottle conditioned ales. Each award winning beer has a distinct flavour of its own, so everyone is sure to find an ale to suit their taste. Tours must be pre-booked and beer is available to buy from the shop.

Chichester Harbour

Chichester Harbour lies west of Chichester, with an entrance from the English Channel between Selsey and Hayling Island. It comprises an area of some twenty-seven square miles of navigable water and provides some of the most rewarding scenery in the south of England.

The harbour is a very popular yachting centre and set in its midst is the second largest marina in Britain offering superb facilities in a beautiful environment. Chichester Marina, set in the rural splendour of the harbour welcomes visiting yachtsmen from around the world.

This vast natural harbour is mainly used for recreational boating and provides an ideal area for all sailing abilities. It is an ornithologist's delight, popular with bird watchers and walkers alike.

Dell Quay, the old port of Chichester, is some two miles from the city.

The beautiful waterside village of Bosham is a magnet for artists. It is steeped in history, most famously as the place from which King Harold II set out on his ill-fated expedition to Normandy. This scene is depicted on the Bayeaux Tapestry. Legend has it that it was here that King Canute attempted to stop the tide approaching.

The village of West Itchenor overlooks the Chichester Channel and the views across the harbour to Chidham, Bosham and Chichester with the Downs behind are excellent.

To the south east of the harbour are to be found the seaside towns of East and West Wittering and Bracklesham Bay, always popular with visitors. The Witterings enjoy wonderful sand and dunes, and are ideal for families.
