RYA Yachtmaster Course & Exam

General Course Information

RYA Yachtmaster Coastal & RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificates of Competence are gained by examination and are conducted by RYA Yachtmaster examiners who are independent of sailing schools.

We run a continuous 5 day RYA Yachtmaster Course directly followed by the exam. It is a flexible course designed deliberately to fine-tune your existing skills and to take into account the different needs of each candidate on the course. Please note that all our RYA Yachtmaster courses are mostly run with 3 students offering everyone their own sleeping area * and more hands-on time to prepare for the exam. During the course whilst you will cover all aspects of the sail training scheme the focus is very much on advanced boat & sail handling as well as practising your navigation skills under exam conditions.

* Please note that the saloon is classed as a sleeping area

The course is based in the Solent where you will spend all 5 days aboard the yacht and experience a wide range of tide and weather conditions, visit a variety of ports and anchorages. Examinations start on a Wednesday afternoon / early evening and depending on the mix of candidates will finish sometime Thursday afternoon / Friday lunchtime.

We run our courses with a maximum of 3 students. This offers each student much more hands-on time and combined with the extra space onboard we find that by reducing the numbers it creates a better learning environment all round.

Our RYA Training Centre is based in Mercury Yacht Harbour on the River Hamble and sailing takes places in and around the Solent.

This course is intended to prepare you for taking the Yachtmaster Exam, there is no fixed syllabus as such and the training varies and is adjusted depending on the requirements of each group.

Please note that this course is intended to fine tune your existing skills not necessarily teach you new ones, so please be brutally honest with yourself about your knowledge and please feel free to call and talk through this with us so that we can advise you.

Your instructor will help you perfect your skills and guide you through some different techniques and skills that will help you through the exam. But it is crucial that students are already at an advanced stage of sailing.

You should be an experienced skipper comfortable with all aspects of sail and boat handling in close quarter situations in tidal waters.

You should be confident taking charge of a crew onboard a typical 38-foot sailing yacht and have all the prerequisites to be eligible for the Yachtmaster Exam.

It is strongly recommended that you have completed the Yachtmaster Shorebased or have the appropriate level of theory knowledge.
