RYA Day Skipper Course

General Course Information

The skippers role is certainly wide and varied. This practical course is quite intensive and runs over 5 days covering all aspects of being a skipper.

You will learn about boat handling, sail selection and handling, pilotage, navigation, seamanship, weather forecasting, victualling & passage planning amongst other things. The aim is to teach the student all aspects involved in taking charge of a yacht safely and confidently. By the end of the course the intention is that the student will be confident to skipper a yacht in familiar waters in favourable weather during daylight hours.

The course is based in the Solent where you will spend all 5 days (or both weekends) aboard the yacht and experience a wide range of tide and weather conditions, visit a variety of ports and anchorages with possibly one longer passage and a night sail.

We aim to mix Competent Crew and Day Skipper candidates so that everyone can learn off each other and at the end of the RYA Day Skipper course you will be confident to skipper a cruising yacht on short passages by day. Please note that as the name suggests this course is fundamentally a practical course and there is not much time to cover large areas of navigation & elements of the theory course. We highly recommend all students have completed the Day Skipper theory course before joining or have a very good level of theory knowledge.

We run our courses with a maximum of 4 students, normally 3. This offers each student much more hands-on time and combined with the extra space onboard we find that by reducing the numbers it creates a better learning environment all round.

We offer the option for you to book your own sleeping area for that extra privacy and comfort but if you are happy to share then we offer a discounted rate.

Our sailing school is based in Mercury Yacht Harbour on the River Hamble and sailing takes places in and around the Solent.
